Marquix Article and Interview

Somewhere around the end of September this year I was asked to do an interview with Lauren Thompson at Marquix Global in support of the international radio play "Next Time Around" is receiving. Below is the full transcript of that article which can also be read directly on the Marquix Global site.  I've eliminated some typos here and formatted it for easy reading.  I'm pretty happy with it.Bailing

Looking forward to November

Rick at The Railway Club, October 24, 2015  It's been a couple of days since our first Saturday night performance at the legendary Railway Club.  Another first for the band was that we used three guitars, with both my son Hart and Graham Ronne showing their chops on electric lead. The dynamic was definitely cool, and we extended a couple of songs to give them both soloing opportunities.I'm

Return to the Railway

Last night Graham and I played a 45 minute feature set for a very appreciative crowd at the ACT in Maple Ridge. Our focus is now squarely on the scheduled performance at the Railway Club on Saturday, October 24th.To say we're excited about this feels like an understatement. Last month we played an early set at the Railway as part of the Puddle City program and our own "epic" Thursday. While everything

Next stop Maple Ridge

Another successful show in a unique setting last Friday. Thanks to Doug Collins and the 50 Cent Guitar Club for including us in their celebration of music and song. The next live performance will also be a little different, and slightly back to the future. Graham Ronne (guitarist and producer on my first EP, One Eye Open) will be joining me to perform a 45 minute original song showcase at The ACT in

How much fun can you have for 50 cents?

On Friday night we are going to participate in the 50 Cent Guitar Club's Exploration of Music as they attempt to expand the reach of an idea I first heard about on CBC radio way back in 2009.  The idea was a simple one - that guitar and song were not about fame and notoriety, but about community. The context of parlour music performed by amateur singers and songwriters in middle class homes had

Website refresh now complete

Over the past month or so I have been slowly updating and upgrading my website (www.rickparnell.com). Most of the changes are subtle, and intended to improve the experience on mobile devices. The Electronic Press Kit is now on a single colour coded page, with clickable access to stream all of the albums in the discography. The videos have been sorted by record as well and available in the same spot

The Beat Goes On

The "epic" Thursday is now history, and what fun it was. Things felt a little shaky to start as weather and traffic conspired to delay our arrival (as well as the arrival of the host and the sound man) at the Railway Club. However, all nervous energy dissipated as the band started into A Numbers Game, and by the end of song 2 (Coexistence) we were in love with this venue. The hardwood stage has some

An Epic Thursday

"Epic!"  That's how Marq DeSouza describes our plans for this Thursday, Sept 24th. Marq hosts an amazing open mic at Trees Organic Coffee on Granville (www.facebook.com/treescoffee) every Thursday evening.  Recently, Marq began playing drums with the Rick Parnell Band, sparking new energy and inspiration. So, when Ross Fairbairn asked us to play Puddle City Arts at the Railway Club

Tonight at 7

Tonight an alternate version of the band will be making its debut at the Seven Dining Lounge (53 Broadway in Vancouver). This will be the first full band outing in several months and will feature Jenn Kobelt on drums. Jenn is a talented local actress who we met while making the Next Time Around video. This is the first opportunity we've had to take Jenn up on her offer to add to our rhythm, and add

A Numbers Game

Late last week I shared tea and a car ride with a fellow local singer-songwriter and dear friend, Harriet Frost. She had requested the meeting for a brief tutorial on the tools available for songwriters and musicians on her new iPad. As we shifted away from technology to update each other on our lives, the conversation took a familiar turn. The question is never just what are we doing as musicians

Why compete?

Let me say up front that I don't believe that "I'm Canada's best new artist," and it probably won't surprise anyone to find out that the title isn't really on my list of aspirations. "But, Rick," you ask, "why are you asking us to vote for you daily in CBC's contest if you don't think you should win?" Fair question - so here's my response: I'm proud of the music we've created and I'd love it

Best laid plans

The crowd in attendance last night may have witnessed one of the band's best performances to date. It was a night where the song was central and the audience and the band were connecting. There were technical challenges for sure, not the least of which was the inability of the venue to live up to its end when it came to the video segment of the program. Everyone seemed to take it in stride, and today

Full band rehearsal

Great full band rehearsal today. The mood was relaxed and the set feels well balanced. Hart treated us to a short classical recital on Terry's guitar afterward. Looking forward to making the Backstage show a fun one tomorrow night - and to catching up with the cast and crew from the Next Time Around video. Best advance ticket sales so far.  Posted with Blogsy
